Business Profile: In the Spotlight

This month we shine a light on two of Teddington’s longest-standing organisations and find out how they’ve moved with the changing times, including overcoming the challenges presented by the pandemic.

First off we talk to an institution founded a century and a half ago, which is still going strong…

Teddington Hockey Club

Teddington Hockey Club is the oldest hockey club in the world. Founded in 1871, we are currently celebrating our 150th anniversary.

Our wonderful club now has over 500 juniors, 250 adult members, acclaimed professional coaches and a large team of volunteers including former Olympians and GB players. Taking into consideration families – parents, grandparents, siblings, partners and others actively linked to our diverse and inclusive membership – the club and its work today involves over 6,500 members from the local community.

Our 14 teams – seven men’s and seven women’s – span a wide range of youth players, back-to-hockey mums and dads, masters and players with disability. We are proud to say we have nurtured literally hundreds over the years to represent the borough, the county and indeed their home nations in the sport.

Changing times

Many clubs closed down in the 1980s when the game shifted from grass to artificial pitches (Astro), as they could not find alternative venues or afford the laying of these pitches. We managed to see through that period and are now burgeoning as a club, continuing to grow year-on-year.

We have created four new ladies teams in the last five years and now have a female captain for the first time in our history. We are proud of our record of inclusivity for people from all walks of life.

Sadly during the pandemic we were banned from playing on our pitches for months on end but the moment lockdown eased we were back providing support, coaching, fun and competition for as many players as possible.

Coversure Insurance Services

We are a local independent insurance brokers opened by Philip Macdonald and Stephen Brown in 1978 – Stephen retired in 2016 and we joined the Coversure franchise. Mel Franke, who joined the business in 2016, now runs the office along with her daughter, who started as an apprentice back in 2019. Our head of accounts is Carol Rush (Philip’s daughter) and we can’t forget to mention our cleaner Doreen who lives in Twickenham; she is 87, and has been with the business since 1978 along with Philip, so it’s quite a family affair.

We have seen big changes over the years, especially with regards to staff retiring and our operating systems, which have been upgraded since joining Coversure; back then we predominately did everything ‘old school’ with lots of paper files and typewriters, so we have had to move with the times.

During the pandemic, we were very lucky as we retained business and also gained a lot more. We have found people like to pop to the office and deal with us on a face-to-face basis and also telephone and get to have a conversation with a real person.

Part of the local community

We love being based in Teddington. You can often see Mel behind the bar at the Conservative Club or at any of the Teddington Together events as she is on the committee. Being a local broker means we have a vast knowledge of the local area, so when you use us you don’t just gain access to a range of high-quality property, liability, commercial and personal policies, you also get a personal service.

We have helped lots of local businesses and home owners with competitive insurances that meet their needs. As a broker we review the insurance market and find the most competitive premiums with good coverage, and we have access to insurers that are not available to the public, which helps to keep the premiums competitive.
