Business Profile: In the Spotlight

This month we chat to Mandy Pitcher of Mandy Pitcher Aromatherapy, whose array of holistic treatments are designed to soothe both body and mind.

When, and why, did you start your business?

I’ve always had a passion for health and wellbeing and a love for essential oils so in 2016 I decided to turn it into a business. I trained for two years with Neals Yard School of Natural Therapies in Covent Garden – it was hard work and challenging but as a result I achieved the role of a Clinical Aromatherapist and am an accredited member of the International Federation Of Professional Aromatherapists.

I offer a number of treatments ranging from aromatherapy massage, facial massage, aromaflexology (very similar to reflexology but using essential oils) and also reiki. The benefits of aromatherapy treatments aren’t limited to just relaxation – the powerful properties of the essential oils help with many conditions such as anxiety, depression and insomnia. Treatments take place in my private purpose-built garden room, where I’ve created a peaceful, safe and comfortable haven for my clients.

What challenges did you face when setting up?

Time was a challenge. There are never enough hours in the day and I had no idea of the complexity of what I needed to learn. I committed a huge amount of time and energy.

What do you love most about running your own business?

The flexibility and the opportunity to be creative. The positive reaction from clients when they experience a treatment or buy my products is very heart-warming.

What valuable lessons have you learned?

The importance of marketing and networking. Social media has been a very valuable asset and I really enjoy it. Immersing myself in the local community has also been important.

Is there anything you would do differently if starting out again?

Yes… I wish I had been braver sooner. Jump in with both feet and get going. It’s harder than it sounds I know, but I wish I’d done that.

What’s your most popular service or product?

My signature treatment which is Facial Rejuvenation; it’s a deeply relaxing holistic treatment, which many say is more relaxing than a full body massage! I use facial acupressure massage, educating the muscles to stay lifted and toned, leaving the skin glowing and full of vitality.

My seasonal facial oil serums – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter – are also very popular. A blend of essential vitamins, fatty acids, antioxidants and aromatic plant oils, they provide your skin with everything it needs each season.

What advice would you share with other small businesses or those thinking of starting out?

Have courage and believe in yourself. Understand your business and understand who your customers are. This is so important. If you have a passion like I do it makes it so much easier.

What are your plans/hopes for the future of the business?

To educate and mentor others. I’ve already started this and it is such a wonderful journey. I advise on setting up holistic businesses and offer advice on formulating products.

Name some other local independent businesses that you love to support?

I simply couldn’t name them all but a couple I love are One Hundred High Street, where Debbie and Sue offer a gorgeous clothes collection and are wonderful with their advice. Ruba does the best Lebanese food and has great service. There are so many fantastic independent businesses in Teddington.

What do you love about our local area?

The sense of community. Plus having Bushy Park on my doorstep and being part of the recently-launched Teddington Traders Market, which has been fantastic. The market, which is held at The Anglers, is on the second and fourth Saturday every month and there will be extra Christmas dates too.
