Councillor’s Update

Railway news

Regular liaison meetings between Councillors and transport operators have resumed, and South Western Trains has confirmed that new walk-through trains with toilets are planned to be in service to coincide with the new timetable in December 2022. Tenders are presently being sought to design and build the new lifts at Teddington Station with work planned to start in July 2022. Meanwhile repair works on the southern footbridge await decisions to improve its appearance.

£250k grant for Elleray Scheme

The Government has made a grant of £250k from the Brownfield Land Release Fund towards the planned new Elleray Hall on the North Lane East depot and car park site and affordable housing to replace the present Elleray Hall. Meanwhile a date for consideration by the Planning Committee is awaited.

New Local Plan drafted

The first draft of the next Local Plan has been prepared and is now going out to consultation. As well as improved planning policies on subjects such as housing and design, there are specific proposals for key sites. One of these is Teddington Police Station.

The draft Local Plan proposes a community/social infrastructure-led, mixed-use development for this site with an element of affordable housing. Alternatively, a 100% genuine affordable housing scheme would be considered.  A more attractive rear boundary treatment is proposed along Park Lane and it is suggested the protected green triangle opposite The Causeway be opened for public use with seating and planting.

Meanwhile, the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) is actively marketing the police station. The risk remains that the highest bidder will unrealistically hope to get permission for market housing, with consequent stalemate and delay, despite this being at odds with planning policies in the present Local Plan.

The garden last month

Very few plants reliably flower in November but the Chinese mahonia eurybracreata is one. Unusually for a mahonia, it is spineless. It eventually grows into a small attractive shrub.
