Getting to Know The Good Wine Shop Teddington

Good news for wine lovers – award-winning independent wine merchant, The Good Wine Shop opens in Teddington this March.

Recently awarded ‘Best London Wine Shop’ by Decanter Magazine, the new shop, located at 47 High Street, will stock over 750 wines from around the globe, including fine and rare wines, craft beers and artisan spirits. Customers can enjoy a by-the-glass list and bar menu. For wine lovers keen to further their wine knowledge, The Good Wine Shop also offers tasting sessions for small groups, hosted by a qualified sommelier, in the shop’s vaulted wine cellar.

Owner Mark Wrigglesworth tells us more:

Welcome to Teddington! We are delighted to have finally found the perfect spot in Teddington. It’s a wonderful community in a beautiful location. We also have shops in Richmond Hill, Kew and Chiswick, so we already have a strong South West London presence.

What’s special about The Good Wine Shop? We work exclusively with lesser-known producers and family-run operations, good wines made by real people with great stories to tell. I’m especially proud of our highly qualified, knowledgeable and experienced team – we have sommeliers and wine-educators amongst us. They all have excellent customer service skills as well as great palates.

Will you be hosting any wine events? We organise monthly masterclasses and themed tastings, so check our website for details. We’re planning a special launch event in March – judging by the reaction so far, the people of Teddington are quite excited about our arrival.

What motivated you to set up your own wine business? I had been involved in start-ups in other sectors since university and had a real passion for wine. One day back in 2004, I called in to my local wine shop in St Margarets and the owner told me he was selling. I came home that day and said to my wife ‘I think I’ve just bought a wine shop’. The rest is history.

What lessons have you learned? Always go with your gut instinct, as it is rarely wrong. Likewise, determination and persistence are critical to success! Finally, build a great team of people around you, who have the same values and different strengths.

What new wine trends can we expect to see in 2020? We are more health conscious and people are drinking less but better quality. If you spend a little more on a bottle, you are getting a lot more bang for your buck, especially with the way the duty and tax works in this country. We have a good selection of vegan-friendly, natural and organic wines, all highlighted via a colour-coded guide. Shopping local – we stock locally sourced English wines such as Fairmile Vineyard in Henley-Upon-Thames.

And finally, if you had one wine tip – what would it be? Move out of your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to try new things, this is something our team love to help you do!
