This month we talk to Sarah Brazier of TW2 bar and restaurant on Twickenham Green
When, and why, did you start your business?
I had started my business before the start of the pandemic, around January 2020. The initial intention was to start a tap room with 20 craft beers available on draught with an assortment of craft cans, and offering street food.
What challenges did you face when setting up?
The cellar needed to be increased in size to accommodate the additional casks and the bar rearranged. Due to the lockdown restrictions, site workers had to be reduced to one experienced carpenter with my inexperienced son assisting.
What do you love most about running your own business?
Being able to build an operation from scratch, creating a client base and meeting new people is what drives me in this business.
What valuable lessons have you learned?
I’ve learnt that it’s best to build the foundation of your business first before introducing a manager to look after your organisation.
Is there anything you would do differently if starting out again?
It would be to thoroughly plan our renovation better and allow more time to organise this, as the project deadline kept being pushed back.
What’s your most popular service or product?
Popular products are espresso martini, Corona on draught, and Beavertown Neck Oil. Popular items from our tapas menu are gambas and garlic mushrooms with pancetta.
What advice would you share with other small businesses or those thinking of starting out?
Try to plan as much as possible, including your renovation budget and marketing spend.
What are your plans/hopes for the future of the business?
Future plans for the business would be to introduce live music evenings as well as monthly DJ nights and wine-tasting evenings.
Name some other local independent businesses that you love to support.
Green Spice and Taste of Raj are two family-run businesses two doors away whom we support. Independent suppliers such as Browns Butcher, Sandy’s fishmonger and Coopers greengrocer are on our list too.
What do you love about our local area?
I love the friendly neighbourhood spirit of Twickenham. Walking in Marble Hill Park, York House Gardens and Kneller Gardens – not to mention walking along the river to Richmond; taking Hammertons Ferry to Ham, and the sculptured wooden benches in Crane Park.
And finally, tell us a little-known fact about yourself!
My parents ran the Turks Head, St Margarets, in the ’60s & ’70s, followed by my brother Chris Brazier in the ’80s and ’90s. For 19 years in the Noughties my sister and I ran The Fox Pub, a CAMRA-award winning pub in Hanwell.
