The COVID-19 lockdown impacted everyone in many different ways. However, amid the uncertainty, there has also been moments for opportunity. A recent survey, by Deloitte, has shown that three in five consumers have used their local high street during lockdown and aim to continue to do so, with an honest focus on shopping local. If there is just one silver lining out of the chaos, it will be the heightened awareness and appreciation of what a close-knit community can achieve.
As things begin to reopen, Discover Twickenham, the new name for the Twickenham Business Improvement District, is focussed on providing a safe and secure town centre for both customers and local businesses in the area. It aims to restore confidence by supporting a safe reopening and a sustainable recovery, concentrating on operations at a street level and ensuring there are strong lines of communication open between all affected parties.
Natasha Heaphy, Manager of the Discover Twickenham BID, said: “We understand many people will feel unsure about going out to the shops and returning to restaurants and pubs as they begin to reopen, but our aim is to ensure that our town centre meets the highest standard of safety at this time.”
Some of the steps include organising a deep, disinfectant clean of the streets, and continuing to operate a weekly high-level cleaning schedule throughout the coming weeks, working closely with the Metropolitan Police to ensure extra security and safety measures are in place, and delivering regular updates of pertinent information to local businesses.
The group has also organised hanging flower baskets down the high street to ensure its aesthetic reflects Twickenham’s vibrant town centre.
Natasha continued: “We will continue to support and communicate with all the local businesses in the area. By working together as a community ,we can make Twickenham come alive as a thriving hub for local shoppers and beyond post COVID-19.”
It is encouraging to see so many Twickenham-based businesses, from a range of industries and sectors, flourishing in this ‘new normal’. It is impossible to know exactly how long the road to recovery will take, but for Discover Twickenham, this is a chance for a new partnership, with a new team at the helm, to make a real difference in Twickenham, for residents and businesses alike.
