Celebrating our community spirit

I became your MP at the end of 2019, a few months before the pandemic hit our world.

With all of us in various states of lockdown for so long, I didn’t have the opportunities I normally would have had to be out and about meeting people and businesses in the constituency. But even through those difficult times, it was clear the community spirit in our area is incredibly strong.

During the pandemic, WhatsApp groups sprouted for neighbours to help each other. Volunteers phoned the elderly so they wouldn’t feel lonely and delivered medicines to those who were isolating. As a community, we pulled together and came out stronger.

I saw this sense of solidarity again earlier this year, after Russia invaded Ukraine.
I was humbled by the generosity of residents and businesses donating time and goods to Twickenham’s Prosperity restaurant, and by those eager to welcome refugees into their homes.

Last month’s celebrations for Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee felt like a joyous culmination of this community spirit. Richmond Borough received over 331 applications for Jubilee street parties – the highest number in London (and I’m told the number of actual parties was much higher!).

I was lucky to join seven street parties on the Sunday of the Jubilee weekend, along with other community events across the constituency. A particular highlight was the entertainment from some of our youngest constituents, including the Archdeacon Cambridge’s choir and the talented musicians from Powerjam Bands. It was amazing to meet so many residents – especially for such a special occasion – and the happiness in the air was palpable.

As a local resident, I’m proud to be part of this community. As your MP, I’m grateful that I can be out and about again – talking to teachers and students, meeting local businesses and charities, and visiting the cultural organisations that add so much to our vibrant area.

I’m also looking forward to what feels like our first ‘real’ summer post-pandemic, with so many community events back in action – including the St Margarets Fair, High Tide Festival, The Big Screen at Twickenham Riverside, and Car-Free Day in September, to name a few.

Thank you to each and every one of you for keeping our community vibe alive – and wishing you a wonderful summer.
