Have a Beer on Us!

Jawbone Brewery founder Ben Hughes reveals the origins of National Beer Day and invites you to his Twickenham taproom for a celebratory drink.

It may not be true that people in the Middle Ages drank ale instead of water, but beer has certainly been a much-loved tipple for Brits for hundreds of years. It even gets a mention in the Magna Carta, signed on June 15th in 1215. More recently, it’s become known as National Beer Day.

There are an estimated 3,000+ breweries all over the country but historically, they would set up shop close to a water source. Brewers needed water to brew, clean and transport ingredients and casks of the finished product. In our corner of London, Griffin Brewery in Chiswick, the Ram Brewery in Wandsworth and the Stag Brewery in Mortlake dominated this stretch of the river as far back as the 16th century.

It’s also where I set up my brewery in 2020. Jawbone Brewing is situated in a working boatyard on Swan Island, in Strawberry Hill. And while we no longer draw our water directly from the Thames, our riverside setting has provided us with an endless supply of inspiration.

Our logo is a lifting hook that was used to bring boats off the water for repair. Our labels feature photographs of textures we find around the boatyard – a paint-splattered beam, metal corroded by the elements, a half-submerged speed boat, still striking even as nature reclaims it. Our Weekend Millionaires Stout is named after the lightermen who ferried passengers along the river, and our Longshore Gang IPA is for those who offloaded goods on the docks. Then there’s our Bone Idle Pale Ale… well, sometimes we all need to kick back and relax after a hard day’s work.

We are so proud to be part of this community. Every day we have regulars, who have become more like friends, popping in to pick up a can or two or to sit a while in our taproom. We are working with the renowned chocolatier William Curley, who has a kitchen just behind us, and support local charities such as the RNLI and Lawrence Dallaglio’s RugbyWorks.

This National Beer Day we will be opening the taproom from 5-9pm to celebrate this elixir of ours. Do come down to support your local brewery on June 15th and enjoy a complimentary half pint on us.
