You don’t always have to walk far to find wildlife. My tiny back garden near the railway line in Twickenham seems to attract all sorts of creatures from dragonflies to foxes.
I keep little piles of wood in shady corners, which make good homes for newts, and trellis fencing is a useful perch for birds seeking insects or kittens to practise acrobatics! Every year sparrows nest in my neighbour’s guttering under the eaves; once a common sight in our streets but now sadly disappearing.
On a warm summer evening, it is a joy to watch my resident hedgehog come out for a bowl of food and in return he keeps the slugs away from my tomatoes.
