Enjoying personalised, inclusive care
The team provides permanent and short-term residential and dementia care and each person receives care that’s tailored to their individual needs and interests. Home manager, Rick, has led the home from the beginning and, with his team, has created a care home where anyone of any age, background or identity would be very happy to live.
For example, when one resident lost his same-sex partner of many years, Rick and the team supported the bereft gentleman to visit the theatre and cinema to enable him to keep in touch with his identity and the LGBTQ+ community.
The adventures continue
Sherwood Grange has its own café, cinema and a hair and beauty salon, plus lovely gardens. The team also organises a huge breadth of activities, events and experiences for residents to enjoy.
Kimberley, the lifestyle lead, explains, “Many Sherwood Grange residents are cosmopolitan, educated and well-travelled. Just because they are living in residential care shouldn’t mean that their adventures should stop.” So, prior to the pandemic, residents went on holiday to a Care UK home in Dorset, and have enjoyed a day trip to France for an afternoon of landscape painting.
Rick runs regular ‘bootcamp’ exercise classes in army fatigues, and Kimberley runs talks about an array of different topics: residents love sharing their memories, opinions and experiences. Games, themed parties and food-related activities are all popular, and, prior to the pandemic, there were regular boat trips on the Thames and evenings out to see shows. There are strong links too with local schools and colleges.
But it’s in the realm of art that Sherwood Grange has developed its strongest reputation. What started with a weekly art group has grown into life drawing classes, regular visits to museums (in normal times) for masterclasses with artists, entering – and winning – multiple art competitions, auctioning artworks for charity or entering them into exhibitions at major art galleries.
