Chris Robshaw, Rachael Burford and Scott Steele. These are just some of the names who have appeared in rugby’s newest fan podcast. Hosted by fans and cousins, Will and Michael Wood, Harlequins Rugby enthusiasts have a brand-new way of engaging with the club, with weekly episodes reviewing performances, offering fan opinions, and interviewing some of the club’s biggest superstars.
Harlequins is in the blood: Will and Michael’s grandfather John Wood played on the Wing for Quins in the 1950s, and they’ve since been brought up in Quins households in different parts of the country. The catalyst that birthed the podcast back in January 2021 was the departure of head coach, Paul Gustard amidst a negative period for the club. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength, with the youth and ambition shown by its players reflected in the podcast as Will and Michael continually look to innovate and create exciting ways to bring fans together through the coronavirus pandemic.
With a fast-growing social media presence in addition to their podcast subscribers, they are keen to use their audience to support the growth of the club and the community. So far, they’ve been big advocates for the women’s game, providing equal support to their journey as well as supporting and promoting The Harlequins Foundation through their Full House Challenge.
Deliberately unpolished, the episodes bring an element of charm as they’re produced and edited by the lads themselves in a short and consumable way, providing the perfect form of escapism during your daily commute or lunch break.
“We are enjoying every minute of running the podcast, it’s been incredibly rewarding providing an outlet for likeminded fans on a regular basis and creating an online community to fill the void left by match days at The Stoop.”
