Why We All Love Twickenham!

Our neighbour Teddington was recently crowned ‘Best place to live in London’ in The Sunday Times’ annual round-up of Best Places to Live in the UK. But with the criteria for an aspirational address including not only great houses and schools, but also ‘a supportive community, where practical conveniences are well catered for locally’, we reckon Twickenham could give it a run for its money.

We asked a few of our regular readers and contributors what businesses and services they love most about our town:

“My favourite shop in St Margarets is The Secret Wardrobe, I get great pleasure from finding a new item to sustainably update my wardrobe for the season. Amazing little shop with excellent service, whilst allowing you to shop environmentally.”

Vanessa James, ETNA Community Centre

“I really love Faith Hair and Beauty in Strawberry Hill Village. Faith and Sami are very accomplished hairdressers, also very professional and welcoming. Rosey does the Beauty, downstairs. I always go to her to look after my nails, but she offers a range of treatments.”

Julia Fiehn, Resident of Strawberry Hill

“My favourite is ‘Streets’, the long-established greengrocers and florists in St Margarets. Carlos and his family have always looked after everyone brilliantly, especially during the past few months in lockdown, and are the cheeriest bunch around.”

Bethan Wood, Strawberry Hill House & Gardens

“For me the best business in the Twickenham area is the quality independent coffee shop Strawberry Hill Café on 72 Tower Road – 10 yards from Strawberry Hill Station. The food is excellent – home-made cakes, salads and light lunches. It is run by the uber-cool Tony Panaysis, and it has a sense of community that you don’t get in the bigger chains. So, if you want a delicious takeaway or to catch up on all the local gossip, it’s the place to go!”

Dr Richard Mills, Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Literature and Popular Culture at St Mary’s University, Twickenham

“I adore excellent coffee – I think I might be a bit of a coffee snob! One particular coffee shop is Café Pera, at 36 Staines Road, run by a lovely Turkish family. They also happen

to sell the BEST, freshest carrot cake ever. A tiny place but always friendly. Highly recommend it.”

Denise Bosque, Therapist, Coach, Trainer

“My favourite business in St Margarets is Sandycombe Lodge, the small, picturesque home designed and lived in by the famous artist JMW Turner. It is situated in a lovely garden, which in spring has the most wonderful flowers in bloom. The house is very homely and rustic, with visitors often commenting how they could see themselves living there.”

Ricky Pound, House Director, Turner’s House

“Twickenham has so many wonderful shops and businesses. Church Street has pretty much everything we love; it’s always a treat to wander through and stop for a browse at Miss Pretty, Allissias Attic or Eel Pie Records. Star Print on Heath Road not only offers stationery, but also quality artist materials and craft sets; plus the service is always friendly and helpful. Zoran’s deli in St Margarets is very welcoming and a great spot for breakfast, lunch or a take-home dinner. The Secret Wardrobe is a fashion-lover’s treat, while Tailor’d Lighting & Interiors is a treasure trove of gorgeous homeware (as is Botanical Home in nearby Whitton).”
