With 25th July marking National Wine & Cheese Day, we’re celebrating this winning combination by shining a light on some local businesses whose bread and butter is wine and cheese. As well as giving us the lowdown on their business, we find out the products customers are loving and get some expert recommendations that are sure to whet
your appetite!

Doran Family Vintners Ltd

“We bought the wine farm in South Africa in September 2010 and immediately started importing the wine products into the UK. I had a very successful sports tour operation, which I had sold to Tui Travel plc, and with money to burn, I needed a place to burn it. 

“The business is family-owned and many of the wines are named after different family members. We specialise in making quality premium wines at prices less than their value demands. They are all still table wines – red, rosé and white.

“Our top three bestselling products are Arya, a blend of Chenin, Grenache and Roussanne; a barrel-fermented (as opposed to tank-fermented) Chenin; and Romy D – a Bordeaux blend red wine.

“Arya pairs well with pecorino and lighter goat’s cheeses. Barrel-fermented Chenin pairs with blue cheeses and Romy D is delightful with mature cheddar, Gouda and Manchego. Of course, all our other wines also pair well with the cheeses of the world!”

Primitivo Club

Business owner: Natalia Gendelman 

Natalia has been in hospitality all her adult life and has worked with celebrity chefs and organised state visits in Ukraine and the UK. Her passion for good wine and Mediterranean cuisine led her to start Primitivo Club just before the pandemic, with the doors to this specialty wine bar and deli opening in the summer of 2021. 

Says Natalia: “We specialise in French and Italian wine and the finest produce from the continent including fresh cheeses from Puglia, cave-aged cheeses from Lake Como, the best charcuterie from Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, as well as ethically sourced Oscietra caviar. 

“Our selection of wines from Puglia are appreciated by wine lovers in the borough and beyond and includes an iconic producer, Gianfranco Fino, whose wine has featured at G7 meetings and royal banquets.

“Our most popular starter is a mixed cheese and charcuterie board for two, including a selection of cheeses and meats, served with home-made fig jam and truffle honey sourdough bread baked in our stone oven. Our Parmigiana is hugely popular – it’s a classic Italian vegetarian dish of grilled slices of aubergine layered with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese and oven-baked. 

“Our wine list of about 100 wines is fairly priced, constantly changing, unpretentious and available by the glass, all of which set us apart. We have a wealth of expertise in wine and cheese pairing and are happy to guide our guests through the experience.”

Ralph’s Wine Cellar & Deli

Ricardo’s Cellar

Business owner: Ricardo Garcia

Ricardo’s Cellar in Church Street is Twickenham’s longest-running independent drinks merchant and was founded by Ricardo with his many years of experience in hospitality. Now, 19 years and two shops later, the business is proud to still be serving drinks to the people of Twickenham, Richmond and the surrounding areas. 

“We specialise in wine, cheese, beers and cigars sourced both locally and internationally. Some of our specialities include our own range of beers, cheese platters made on site, seasonal cocktails and locally sourced delights such as honey. We also do in-store and private tastings, pop-up bars, weddings and stalls. You’ll often find us at events serving up Pimm’s in the summer and our home-made mulled wine at Christmas. 

“It’s hard to pick just three of our top sellers but our very own lager, Ricardo’s Cellar Sovereign Lager, made using the Sovereign hop and akin to the Helles style, is very popular. PEMO Pecorino – a stunning, dry white wine that’s a great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc – is always at the top of our best-selling list, as is our St Julien Walnut cheese; adorned with walnut halves, this creamy cheese is a winner every time.

“Our approach to wine and cheese pairing is simply drink and eat what you enjoy – but we’d be delighted to make a few recommendations. A handy tip is to have a look at where the cheese is made and what wine that area typically produces. For example, Comte from the Franche-Comte region in Eastern France pairs nicely with the fruity Chardonnays from that region. Always feel free to get in touch for more food pairing ideas.”

The Good Wine Shop

The Good Wine Shop is an independent wine merchant with shops in Teddington, Kew, Richmond Hill and Chiswick; trading for nearly 20 years, the Teddington shop opened just a few days before the first lockdown in March 2020. 

“Our team in Teddington, managed by Niall Ward Gist, includes three passionate and knowledgeable wine experts who can help customers with any recommendations and food pairing, however quirky it is! We specialise in artisanal wines from small producers – the majority being organic and beyond. 

“Our tagline ‘Good wine, Real people, Great stories’ resonates with our philosophy: wines made by people rather than corporations and made to be enjoyed rather than hoarded! We stock wines from all over the world but like to put the spotlight on off-the-beaten track regions and producers – we have just celebrated Grower Champagne in June, showcasing smaller family-run outfits, flying in the face of the Grandes Marques!

“We are very seasonal, with rosés from all over the world flying out during the summer months, slowly turning into richer, more comforting reds over the autumn and winter months. Over the past year our top three best sellers are the great-value Champagne Gallimard, seriously drinkable Sarotto Gavi di Gavi, and Katie Jones’s southern French rouge.

“We’ve been fully open for drink-in for a couple of months now, after a long hiatus because of Covid. We’ve got a monthly, changing by-the-glass list, bottles at take-home prices + £10 corkage, and cheese boards curated by ourselves and Teddington Cheese to pair with each month’s glasses. We’re absolutely loving the Minière F & R’s Champagne at the moment, alongside Tony’s Brie de Meaux.”
